Nicole Kidman was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her father, Anthony, is a biochemist and clinical psychologist and her mother, Janelle, is a nursing instructor. Soon after her birth her family moved to Washington, D.C. They stayed there for three years when her father researched on breast cancer. Then they moved to Sydney.
Nicole Kidman as a child learnt ballet, mime and drama and took part in several stage shows in school. To take up acting as a career she left high school before the completion of her studies. In 1983 she bagged a role in Bush Christmas, an Australian holiday favorite, when she was just 16 years of age. Nicole’s acting touched the hearts of hundreds of people. Soon she started getting offers from TV production houses. The same year she appeared in the lead role of BMX Bandits. In 1986 she won the Australian Film Institute Award for acting in a film named Vietnam.
Nicole Kidman starred opposite to Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder. They both fell in love while they were shooting for the film. The couple got married on December 24, 1990. He earned rave acclamation in Gus Van Sant's To Die For in 1995. Her performance in a comic role in the film earned her the Golden Globe and several critics' awards.
In 1996 she starred in the leading role in a Portrait of a Lady, which is an adaptation Henry James's very famous novel. The following years Nicole Kidman acted in numerous films and proved her talent. One of her most memorable films is Moulin Rouge directed by Baz Luhrmann.
Nicole Kidman actively participates into a number of charities and social causes. Since 1994, Nicole Kidman is the Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF Australia. She has worked in the fund raising campaigns for the most underprivileged children in Australia. She was declared as the Citizen of the World by United Nations in 2004.
