Plot - Cloverfield is a monster and horror film directed by Matt Reeves and produced by J. J. Abrams. The script is written by Drew Goddard. Paramount Pictures carried out a viral marketing campaign to endorse the film. The film is about five young New Yorkers who throw their friend a farewell party on the same night that a gigantic monster attacks the city.
Cloverfield follows the five New Yorkers from the angle of hand held video camera. The movie is exactly the length of a DV Tape and a sub-plot is designed by showing pieces of video recorded earlier on the tape that is being recorded over. The movie begins with a monster of unknown origin and destroys a building. As the local administrators go to investigate, parts of the building and the head of the Statue of Liberty shower down. The movie follows their adventure trying to escape and save their friend, a love interest of the lead character.
Awards – The film is nominated by the Saturn Award Best Science Fiction Film in the segment of Best Supporting Actress (Lizzy Caplan).
Review - Cloverfield was released in 3,411 theaters on January 18, 2008 and bagged a total of $16,930,000 on its very opening day in the United States and Canada. It further made $40,058,229 on its first week, making it the most successful January released movies of all time. The worldwide profit of this film has been around $152,959,793, thus making it the first movie in 2008 to gross over $100 million.
