Plot – Bruges happens to be the most well-preserved medieval city in Belgium. It is a well known destination for travelers from all over the world. Ray and Ken visited the place, though it could be their final destination. Due to a difficult job they had to visit the place right before Christmas, ordered by their London boss Harry. They travel around this Flemish city for a couple of weeks.
The impressive gothic architecture, canals, and cobbled streets make up the superb backdrop of the film. Ray hates the place due to the haunting thoughts of bloodshed in London, while Ken enjoys the funny exploits of Ray and eventually finds his mind and soul being stretched out to the beauty and serenity of the city. But the longer they stay; they wait for Harry's call impatiently. Eventually, their experiences become even more surreal, as they find themselves in strange encounters with the locals, tourists and violent medieval art. They also meet a dwarf American actor shooting for a European art film, Dutch prostitutes, and a likely romance for Ray in the recognition of Chloë. And when finally Harry calls them back, Ken and Ray's vacation becomes a life-and-death struggle of dark comic proportions and surprisingly emotional strategies.
Review - The film received generally favorable reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes reported that 75% of critics gave the film positive reviews, which was based on 75 reviews. Metacritic reported the film had scored an average of 67 out of 100 reports and 28 reviews. Chicago Sun According to the Times film critic Roger Ebert, the film is an endlessly surprising one, very dark, human comedy, with a plot that can only be relished.
